What SCEC approval actually means.
The Security Construction and Equipment Committee is an Australian Government body that evaluates security equipment and endorses individuals to work on it. Two distinct things carry SCEC status, and they are routinely confused in marketing:
Endorsed equipment
Products such as locks, containers, cabinets and alarms that have been evaluated and listed for use in protecting Australian Government resources. A product either appears on the relevant list or it does not.
Approved locksmiths
Individuals who have met the scheme's requirements and are approved to install, service and inspect that endorsed equipment. This is a personal approval. It is held by a named person, it has a scope, and it has an expiry.
Why the distinction matters to you
A company cannot itself be SCEC approved. A company can only employ or engage approved individuals. So the meaningful assurance is never "the business is approved": it is which named, currently approved individual will carry out the work, and does their approval cover this category.
If any supplier tells you their company is universally SCEC approved, that is a reason to look more closely at everything else they have told you.

No, and no company is. SCEC approval is granted to individual locksmiths, not to businesses. Our team includes SCEC-approved locksmith capability, which means a named approved individual can carry out eligible work. Ask us who that is for your project and verify their approval independently.
How do I verify an approval?
Ask for the individual's name and approval details, then confirm them through the official channel rather than accepting a logo or a certificate image. Any supplier who is genuinely approved will expect this and will not be troubled by it. If asking causes friction, treat that as informative.
Does my project actually need a SCEC approved locksmith?
That is determined by your organisation's security policy or your contract, not by a locksmith. Many commercial projects that feel high-security do not fall under the scheme at all and are better served by good commercial hardware. Send us the requirement and we will read it with you rather than guessing.
Can you supply SCEC endorsed equipment?
Equipment endorsement is separate from personnel approval, and availability depends on the specific product and the current endorsement lists. Tell us what the specification calls for and we will confirm what can be supplied and installed, and where an alternative would need your approval.
What if the approved individual is unavailable?
Then work requiring that approval waits, or goes to another approved individual. It cannot be delegated to an unapproved person on the basis that they work for the same business. If timing is critical to your project, raise it early so scheduling is built around it.
